　　Why do so many Americans distrust what they read in their newspapers? The American society of Newspaper Editors is trying to answer this painful question. The organization is deep into a long self-analysis known as the journalism credibility project.

　　Sad to say , this project has turned out to be mostly low-level findings about factual errors and spelling and grammar mistakes ,combined with lots of head-scratching puzzlement about what in the world those readers really want .

　　But the sources of distrust go way deeper. Most journalists learn to see the world through a set of standard templates (patterns) into which they plug each day’s event.

　　為什么如此多的美國人不相信他們從報刊上看到的東西呢?美國報刊編輯協會正在嘗試解釋這一讓人頭疼的問題。該組織正在進行長期的自我分析，即人們所知的新聞可信度調查。

　　令人遺憾的是，新聞可信度調查的最終結果主要是一些低水平的發現，它只是發現了一些報道與事實不符以及報道中存在的拼寫和語法錯誤等問題，其中還夾雜著許多關于讀者究竟想要什么的困惑。

　　但對報刊不信任有更深層的原因。大部分記者通過一套標準模式來看世界，并用它衡量每天發生的事。
