　　談到中西文化差異（When it comes to cultural difference)，有一個說法：洋鬼子講究個人福祉（individual welfare)，我們注重集體利益(colletive interests)，前者謂之個人主義(individualism)，后者稱為集體主義(collectivism)。提及individualism, 傳統(tǒng)一點的中國人可能嗤之以鼻，其實大可不必。
　　After all, it should be admitted that it is human nature for an individual to consider his or her own interests.
　　畢竟，應(yīng)該承認(rèn)，作為一個人，考慮自己的利益是合乎人性的。
　　其實（in fact, indeed, actually)，individualism與collectivism也就是一種總體的傾向（general inclination)，而不可能走極端（go to extremes)：前者（the former)完全取消(cancel)集體，后者(the latter)消滅(get rid of, eliminate, eradicate)個人。
　　所以，西方人私有財產(chǎn)（private property)神圣不可侵犯，中國也有老話叫做“人不為己，天誅地滅”，聽來很黑很暴力，實則很直很實在。
　　中國人講把我們的青春和生命獻給偉大的祖國（devote our youth and life to the great country)，而美國的花花公子總統(tǒng)肯尼迪在其就職演說中（in his inaugural address)，也這樣呼吁民眾(call on the people)：
　　Do not ask what your country can do for you. 不要問國家能為你做什么。
　　Ask what you can do for your country. 要問你能為國家做什么。
　　collectivism自然強調(diào)的是“合”（co=一起/一致），individualism講的就是“分”。具體說來：in=否定，后有divide為分。
　　故individual作“個體”，源自字面義“不可分”。
　　而divide表示“分開”，據(jù)說主要是V的功勞：長得就是個人開的樣子。老鞋能記得的還有valley(峽谷），V還真有點“峽氣”吧。

　　In international affairs, it is not always so easy to interpret the remarks or behaviors of another country.
　　在國際事務(wù)中，要理解另一個國家的言論或行為的含義，并不總是那么容易。
　　In interpersonal relation, it is important to interpret properly the remarks or behaviors of others.
　　在人際關(guān)系中，恰當(dāng)（properly)理解他人的言論或行為是非常重要的。
　　看來跟inter-耗上了：international, interpersonal, 還有interpret。
　　確實，inter=際=在……之間。
　　interpret（理解/解釋）跟inter-又有何關(guān)系？
　　理解/解釋，其實就是在兩個individuals之間架起一座橋，不是嗎？
　　看它的一個引申義“口譯”，會更加清楚：做口譯，豈非在兩個人之間進行？
　　If you interpret for national leaders, it shows/indicates/suggests/implies/demonstrates/illustrates that you are a great interpreter.
　　如果你為國家領(lǐng)導(dǎo)人做口譯，那說明(注意順便再會見一下那一串“說明”）你是個很牛叉的譯員。
　　If an interpreter is working, it is improper to interrupt.
　　如果一個譯員在工作，不宜從中打擾。
　　In international relation, it is improper to interfere/intervene with the internal affairs of other countries.
　　在國際關(guān)系中，一國不宜干涉別國內(nèi)政。
　　以inter-開頭，又是一個動作，少不了是別人有事，你“從中”（inter)插一杠子，所以是“打擾、干涉”等。
　　思考題：
　　interim government是什么政府？
　　have a rest at short intervals是說休息有何時間特征？
　　internship表示“實習(xí)期”你能理解嗎。
