China has 400,000 new cases of epilepsy every year
Chinanews, Beijing, June 28 – Today marks the world’s first day of caring for epileptics. The theme for this year’s Caring for Epileptics Day is “eliminating prejudice and walking out of the shadow.” When attending an epilepsy conference in Beijing, Zhang Huiben, an expert from the China Association Against Epilepsy said that there were about 50 million epileptics in the world, with 40 million of them in developing countries. As China entered into an aging society, he said, the incidence of cerebrovascular disease and degenerative diseases of the nervous system is on the rise. In recent years, epilepsy disease has been occurring more and mroe among old people.
In China, there are 400,000 new cases of epilepsy every year. China currently has 9 million people suffering from the disease. Among them, 6 million have an epileptic seizure every year. Due to insufficient medical resources and people’s misunderstanding about the disease, 4 million epileptics not got proper treatment, accounting for 63% of the total number of the patients suffeing from epileptic seizures, Zhang said in Beijing on Wednesday.
To diagnose whether a person is an epileptic, doctors have to carry out an electroencephalogram (EEG) of the person before they can make a conclusion. Clinical researches show that with proper medical treatment, 80% of the new patients can avoid epilepsy seizures and 60% of them can recover from the disease after receiving treatment for 2-5 years. However, due to social prejudices, 89% of the patients and 76% of their relatives feel ashamed for the disease.
Epileptic seizures often occur without any omens. Some people become handicapped after getting the disease and in some cases, it is really difficult for them to recover from it. In addition, some patients don’t know why they catch the disease. Epileptics often have to face prejudices in their study, employment, and marriage issues. Sometimes, the high medical costs make them shoulder a heavy financial burden. All these cause some epileptics to feel worried about their disease and inferior to other people. In addition, social prejudices, the imperfect legal system and insufficient medical services might also contribute to their anxiety. So, epilepsy is not only a physical disease, it is also a mental disease, which has now become a public health problem.
